What is Texas Hold'em?

The world's most popular poker game

The Goal

Texas Hold'em is simple at its core: make the best five-card poker hand and win the chips in the pot. You can also win by betting in a way that makes every other player fold.

Two Ways to Win

Either show down the best hand at the end, or make everyone else fold before that. Both strategies are equally valid and great players use both.

The Cards

The game uses a standard 52-card deck. Each player receives two private cards (hole cards), and five shared community cards are dealt face-up on the board.

Your Hand vs Community Cards

Your two hole cards are private — only you can see them. The five community cards on the board are shared by all players. You combine your hole cards with the community cards to make the best possible five-card hand.

Key Concept

You can use both, one, or even none of your hole cards combined with the community cards. Your final hand is always exactly five cards.

Winning the Pot

The pot is the total of all chips bet during the hand. You win the pot either by having the best hand at showdown or by making all opponents fold. Knowing when to go to showdown and when to bluff is what separates good players from great ones.
