Understanding probability in poker
Poker odds represent the probability of completing a winning hand. Every decision at the table — whether to call, raise, or fold — comes down to understanding how likely you are to end up with the best hand.
Unlike pure games of chance, poker gives you information to work with. By calculating odds, you turn guesswork into informed decisions that are profitable over the long run.
Texas Hold'em uses a standard 52-card deck with four suits of 13 cards each. Everything in poker probability starts from this number. The more cards you know about, the more precisely you can calculate your odds.
Card Knowledge by Street
After you see your two hole cards, you know 2 out of 52 cards, leaving 50 unknown. Once the flop is dealt, you know 5 cards total (your 2 plus 3 community cards), leaving 47 unknown.
The remaining unknown cards determine your probability of hitting a winning hand. The fewer unknowns that help you, the lower your odds. The more cards that can improve your hand, the better your chances.
