Make profitable decisions
Every bet should have a purpose. Strong players bet for three main reasons, and understanding these is key to building a winning strategy.
Value
Betting when you think you have the best hand, to get worse hands to call.
Bluff
Betting with a weak hand to make better hands fold.
Protection
Betting to deny free cards that could improve your opponent's hand.
Pot odds tell you the price you're getting to call a bet. Compare this price to your chance of winning to decide if a call is profitable.
The Formula
Pot odds = Amount to call / (Pot + Amount to call)
Example:

What is the main reason to bet in poker?
How much you bet matters as much as whether you bet. Different sizes achieve different goals.
Small (25-33% pot)
Frequent bluffs, thin value bets on dry boards. Gives opponents bad odds to call with draws.
Medium (50-75% pot)
Standard value bets and semi-bluffs. The most common sizing in modern poker.
Large (pot+ overbets)
Polarized ranges — either very strong hands or big bluffs. Maximum pressure.
